Today the celebration passes off peacefully but in the early past the Twelfth has been accompanied by violence between Protestants and Catholics.
Protestants see the Twelfth as an important part of their culture while Catholics see many aspects of it as sectarian and supremacist.
Large parades are held by the Orange Order and Ulster Loyalist marching bands. Streets are plastered with union jacks and bunting, and huge towering bonfires are lit in loyalist neighbourhoods.
Though the Troubles officially ended in 1998, the walls between Catholics and Protestants still stand. People continue to live mostly a separate lives and more than 90 percent of children go to schools segregated by religion.
